Top Tips for Epic Travels

Whether you're heading out on vacation or embracing slow travel, here are essential tips we've used and learned along the way.

1. ✅Check Travel Requirements & Safety Advisories

Before you go, check your country’s official travel website for security advisories, entry requirements, and necessary visas or authorizations. Some countries require an electronic travel authorization (ETA) or visa before arrival, so planning ahead can help avoid last-minute issues.

  • Start at least a month in advance to allow for processing delays.
  • Some visa applications require passport photos, proof of onward travel, or specific documentation.
  • When we visited Vietnam, we needed an electronic visa (e-visa) and ran into some tech issues but managed to get it in time—don’t leave it until the last minute!

2. 💰Cash is King—Especially in Asia

While credit cards are widely accepted in many places, cash is still essential, particularly in Asia, where small vendors and local markets often don’t take cards.

  • Exchange currency before arrival or withdraw from ATMs. ATM fees can add up, so check if your bank reimburses them. We recommend Charles Schwab, which refunds international ATM fees.
  • Bring at least 2-3 credit/debit cards in case an ATM swallows one 🏧😱 or fraudulent activity locks your account.
  • In some countries, money exchange services require crisp, new $100 bills (no creases or markings).
  • Carry small bills for street food, local transit transportation, and local markets where exact change is often required.

3. 📶Stay Connected with an eSIM

Avoid expensive international roaming fees by using an eSIM from providers like Airalo, Holafly, or Nomad. These allow you to access mobile data without swapping physical SIM cards.

  • Check which provider has the best coverage in your destination—some work better than others.
  • Download and activate the eSIM before departure to ensure a smooth transition upon arrival.
  • We’ve used Airalo, but in some areas, local SIMs have provided better coverage and pricing.

4. 🤝Join Local Social Network Groups

One of the best ways to get real-time travel tips and recommendations is by joining social media groups for your destination.

  • Look for social media groups using "Expats in [City]" or "[City] Travel Tips."
  • These groups often share hidden gems, restaurant recommendations, and safety updates that aren’t in guidebooks.
  • We’ve found great street food stalls and off-the-beaten-path experiences thanks to tips from these groups!

5. 📲Research Useful Apps Before You Go

Downloading the right apps ahead of time can make your trip easier and more convenient. Consider these:

  • Communication: WhatsAppFree texting & calling over Wi-Fi (great for contacting hotels, tour guides, as well as keeping in contact with family and friends)
  • Ride-hailing: Grab and Bolt (similar to Uber/Lyft). We've had great luck with Grab.
  • Public transport: Citymapper, Moovit.
  • Translation: Google Translate (download languages offline). We use this often!
  • Currency conversion: Xe, Revolut.
  • Food delivery: GrabFood, Uber Eats. -  ☕📲💦 Ordered Starbucks while lounging by the pool? Yes, I did!
  • Offline maps: Google Maps, Maps.me—lifesavers when Wi-Fi is spotty!

6. 🚌 Driving Abroad? Get an International Driving Permit (IDP) 🏍️

If you plan to rent a car or motorbike, check whether your destination requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your home country’s license.

  • Get your IDP from AAA before traveling—it’s often valid for a year.
  • If renting a motorbike, it’s highly recommended (and often required) to have a motorcycle license.
  • Always check local traffic laws—some countries have strict regulations on driving without proper documentation.

7. 🎒Additional Travel Tips 🌍

✅ Check power adapters & converters—Different countries use different plug types and voltages! Make sure you have the right adapter (for plug shape) and converter (if your device isn’t dual voltage). Hair dryers & straighteners often require converters!

✅ Use a VPN for secure browsing, especially on public Wi-Fi.

Be mindful of cultural norms—research local customs and dress codes to show respect (ex. dress code to visit temples🏯).

By planning ahead, staying connected, and leveraging local resources, you can enjoy smoother travels and make the most of your adventures!
